Well, it's been a little while since we unleashed BD9 and so we thought it was about time we had a launch. The wonderful folk at The Poetry Cafe are letting us use their newly revamped (and air-conditioned!) space so we'd love you to join us for an evening of tail-wagging fun. Hosted by co-editors Edward Doegar and Joanne Clement and featuring readings from some of the incredible poets featured in BD9.

Confirmed Readers: Thomas Crompton, Taylor Edmonds, Niall Firth, Roland Fischer-Vousden, Dawn Gorman, Will Harris, Ian Humphreys, Jacqueline Saphra and Julia Webb.

Kennelling the Dog

As we’re fast approaching the publication of our tenth issue this feels like the right time to take stock.

When the co-founders first got together in 2011 we were all based in or around NewcastleGateshead. Now you’ll find us spread out all over the UK. We were all just starting out then and now we’re a bit longer in the tooth and a bit busier with other commitments outside the magazine. I’ve been Managing Editor for half a decade and so it also feels like the right time for me to step down and see what some new blood can do.

One of the reasons we’re taking stock is that none of the editors, assistants editors, guest editors or typesetters get paid for the brilliant work that they do to make the magazine happen. The Managing Editor role has also relied on donated time since May 2016 and the marketing is done on less than a shoe string. Something else that feels less and less acceptable is the fact that readers receive a ‘contributor’s copy’ rather than cold, hard cash for their amazing words. In the future, we’d like to remedy that.

So while we think of ways to continue to create an amazing magazine AND make it financially viable in a way that means we can pay poets and editors, we’re making like Glastonbury Festival and having a fallow year in 2018. This will give us the time and space to think about the structure of BD and to build a team that can take us into the future. We hope you’ll all join us again in 2019 but in the meantime, watch this space…
