August at Slung Low Hub

Here is the latest newsletter from Slung Low Hub listing events coming up in August:

News for August from Slung Low

As many of you will be aware we've been spending large parts of the year in Hull. Our piece Flood is a headlining project for Hull UK Capital of Culture 2017.

The third, stand-alone part of Flood has been made for BBC television as part of the Performance Live strand and it will be broadcast at 10pm on Saturday 12th August on BBC 2.

Presented on a floating stage in Hull's Victoria Dock, written by James Phillips, Flood mixes live performance, special effects, film and digital elements to tell a story across an entire year. Each part of this unprecedented piece of storytelling can be experienced as a stand-alone piece, whilst linking to the other parts. Part Three, like the other installments, has a community chorus of performers taken from volunteering Hull residents.

Having begun as an online presentation in February, the first live performances of Flood took place in Hull's Victoria Dock in in April. Introduced by Nihal Arthanayake the TV production Flood Part Three: To the Sea in August takes the action forward and asks a simple question: what if the fleeing masses from our TV screens and Twitter feeds, in their boats and their orange lifejackets, had English accents?
Because displacement is like disease: deep down we think it only happens to other people.

We are really excited about bringing our work to a national television audience and hope you get the chance to catch it either on BBC2 or the iPlayer.

We will be sending out an additional email to let you all know about the onsale date for tickets for Part Four.

Thanks to everyone who came to see Rugby Shorts at Selby RLFC as part of Selby Arts Festival - the team had a brilliant time reviving the show and presenting it to new audiences.

Back home in Leeds, The HUB felt warmer than ever recently with our first Dementia Friendly event with The Memory Store and Yorkshire Silents - we forged some new links with organisations and individuals which we hope to build on going forwards. There's a few pictures over on our Facebook page here.

Scalarama is a nationwide celebration of cinema, for everyone, by everyone, everywhere, taking place every September. Cities, towns and villages are transformed with cinemas popping up in unexpected places – and where classic, rare or locally made films get an annual showing.

Our offerings at the HUB will be Resilience - The Biology of Stress and The Science of Hope - a one-hour documentary that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent Toxic Stress. We are delighted to be presenting this screening in association with our friends at Basis Yorkshire on Thurs 7th September at 6:30pm

Then on Fri 8th September at 7:30pm we present a screening of Brown Willy, directed and produced by Brett & Simon Harvey (O Region, Kneehigh Theatre) described by New Statesman as '"Cornwall's answer to Withnail & I".

There's trailers for both films on the booking pages, so do give them a look!

Here's the list of events for the rest of the year in the HUB. You will be able to click through to find out more and book tickets in a few days time so please keep checking!
