Ever since William Shakespeare bequeathed his ‘second best bed’ to his wife Anne, the barely-veiled snub has been viewed as one of history’s greatest slights.
But was Shakespeare’s ‘second best bed’ bequest an act of love?
William Shakespeare
One of the most fascinating mysteries dealing with William Shakespeare is the fact that he left his wife, Anne Hathaway, nothing but his 'second best bed'. This odd bequest has puzzled biographers for centuries.
The Second Best Bed, a brilliant one-woman play, full of both humour and pathos, has received great critical acclaim since its premier at the Swan Theatre Worcester in 2012. Liz Grand stars as Anne Hathaway on the night of Shakespeare’s funeral.
The Second Best Bed, Liz Grand, Anne Hathaway
Dressed in black, Anne Hathaway mourns the death of “our bright star”. But this is no ordinary widow. Buxom and bawdy, she displays a passionate feat of character as she weaves a cunning plotline for one of the greatest literary mysteries - that will leave you spellbound.
The wake has finished, the mourners have all gone home, leaving Anne to remember her life with the most talented playwright the world has ever seen. Or was he? Did he write the plays?
His widow would know if anybody did. Wouldn’t she?
