Louise's top ten tips for a submission letter include:
DON'T try too hard. Many authors try to make their query letter stand out by including jokes and trying to make their query letter 'outside of the box'. If the author has chosen to prioritise style over content in the query letter then this can signal to the agent that the author may have applied the same approach to the book. Additionally, if someone comes across as a bit too 'quirky' this can throw doubt in the agent's mind about whether they might be able to work with the author. So it's always best to approach writing a query letter to an agent as if you were applying for a job; keep it concise and to the point.
